Lecturer of philosophy in the Institute of Philosophy, University of Wroclaw, Poland.
Educated in Wroclaw University (1984), Oxford University (1988-1989), and City University of New York (1992). Ph.D. in Philosophy awarded for thesis Science and Method in Karl Popper's Philosophy (1992, Jagiellonian University, Cracow).
He translated from English in to Polish, and edited, a number of books, among them five books of Sir Karl Popper's: Objective Knowledge (Polish ed. 1992), Open Society and its Enemies (ed. polish ed. 1993), Open Universe: An Argument for Indeterminism (Polish edition 1996), A World of Propensities (Polish Ed. 1996), and Unended Quest: An Intellectual Autobiography (Polish edition planned for 1997). He also translated a number of works related to the philosophy of Critical Rationalism, e.g. Alan Chalmers's What is This Thing Called Science? (1993), John Watkins's Explaining History (a collection on J. Watkins's papers on Methodological Individualism, 1992), and Jan Lukasiewicz's Aristotle's Syllogistic From the Standpoint of Modrn Formal Logic (1988).
He wrote his own two books on Popper's philosophy, among them: Wprowadzenie do filozofii Karla R. Poppera, (1990, a polish counterpoint of Brian Magee's Introductory book on Popper) and the latest, Filozofia Popperia: Analiza krytyczna, [Popper's Philosophy: A Critical Analysis], Wroclaw University Press. He was awarded the Minister of Education Award in 1996.
Adam Chmielewski met Sir Karl barely six weeks before Sir Karl passed away in September, 1994, and conducted what appears to be the last ever interview with Sir Karl. This interview has been published in Polish, Croation, and Italian.
Among his translations there are also Bertrand Russell's Portraits from Memory: The Value of Free Thuoght (1995), Alasdair MacIintyre's Short History of Ethics (1995) and After Virtues (1996) as well as a couple of Novels of British and American writers.
Adam Chmielewski is a free lance writer for, and a member of the editorial board of the Wroclaw monthly journal Odra, where he is in charge of the philosophy section. He is also a member of the editorial board for the Polish philosophical quarterly Kultura Wspolczesna, and contributes frequently to the Warsaw weekly Wiadomosci Kulturalne.
